Christmas Crack (Saltine Cracker Toffee)
Last Updated on September 17, 2026 by Kiersten James
Easy Christmas crack made with saltine crackers, buttery toffee, and chocolate. A simple 5-ingredient Christmas candy recipe.

Christmas crack is one of those things I only make around Christmas. Once I start eating it, I cannot stop – it’s a problem.
It’s made with a layer of saltine crackers covered in buttery brown sugar toffee and melted chocolate. If you have flaky salt, you can throw a little on top, as it makes the chocolate and caramelized toffee taste even better.
There’s no candy thermometer or candy making involved.
The toffee cooks for 3 minutes on the stove, everything goes into the oven for five minutes, and then the chocolate melts right across the top.
After it chills and sets, I break the whole thing into random pieces. Some are big, some are small, and nobody cares because it’s all going to get eaten that night anyway.
Why You’ll Love This
- Only 5 ingredients
- No candy thermometer
- Sweet and salty
- Quick to make. Most of the time is just waiting for it to chill.
- Keeps well, so you can make it before you actually need it.
- Great for Christmas trays in between cookies and other Christmas candy.
The Most Important Part: Boil the Toffee for 3 Minutes
The only part of this recipe that really matters is giving the butter and brown sugar enough time to cook.
Wait until the mixture reaches a full, steady boil before you start your 3-minute timer. Keep it boiling and stir constantly for the entire 3 minutes.
If you start the timer before the butter reaches a full boil, or pull the toffee from the heat too soon, it may stay soft and sticky instead of setting into a crisp toffee layer.
How to Make Christmas Crack
Ingredients:
- 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Flaky salt, optional
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, edge to edge. My kids do this for me while I make the toffee.

Add the butter and brown sugar to a saucepan over medium heat.
Bring to a full boil, stirring frequently.
Once boiling, cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture over the crackers and spread evenly.

Bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling all over.

Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the top.

Let sit for about 3 minutes to soften the chocolate, then spread into an even layer. Sprinkle with flaky salt, if desired.

Refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until completely firm.
Break into irregular pieces and serve.
Storage & Freezing:
Keep Christmas crack in an airtight container on the counter for a week, in the refrigerator for 2 weeks, or freeze for 3 months.
Let it firm up completely first, then transfer the pieces to a freezer-safe container with parchment paper between the layers.
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Why is my Christmas crack chewy instead of crunchy?
The toffee most likely didn’t cook long enough. Make sure the butter and brown sugar reach a full boil before starting the 3-minute cooking time.
Why did my butter separate from the brown sugar?
This can happen if the temperature changes too quickly or the mixture isn’t stirred enough. Keep the saucepan over medium heat and stir frequently as it comes to a boil, then constantly during the 3-minute boil.
Can I use milk chocolate instead?
Yes. You can substitute milk chocolate chips for the semisweet chocolate, although the finished candy will be sweeter.
Can I make Christmas crack ahead of time?
Yes. This is a really good Christmas recipe to make ahead because it keeps well in the refrigerator. Make it several days before you need it and keep it chilled in an airtight container.
Do I have to refrigerate Christmas crack?
Once it has set, it can sit out for a while on a Christmas tray. For storage longer than a week, I prefer the refrigerator because the chocolate and toffee stay firm.
