Make your home smell like fresh laundry with this DIY linen spray made from essential oils, water, and vodka or witch hazel.

Depending on my schedule and what’s going on with Mike and the kids during the week, I strip all of the beds on Thursdays or Saturdays. When I was younger and things were calmer, I was able to wash our clothing and linens on the same day.

As the family grew and time became more valuable, it was more efficient for me to separate the sheets and towels to have their own wash day.

I’m a sucker for things smelling good and especially love it when I pull a stack of clean sheets or towels from the closet and they still smell fresh.

For years, I would buy linen sprays from Home Goods or Target until I realized how toxic they were. I now make my own, and it’s become one of my favorite little homemaking routines.

This homemade natural laundry spray is easy to make and the perfect way to refresh your linens, towels, laundry baskets, or even the guest room before company arrives. The scent is soft, clean, and makes everything feel freshly washed.

Why You Should Make Your Own Linen Spray

Typical store-bought linen sprays contain artificial fragrance oils, which are known to trigger allergies, asthma, and hormone disruption in some people. By making your own, you can control exactly what ingredients go in while getting a clean scent that makes your whole home feel cared for.

How to Make DIY Natural Laundry Spray

This simple recipe uses high-quality essential oils, water, and a very small amount of witch hazel or vodka to help the oils mix with the water. It’s safe, non-toxic, and gives your laundry that “just washed” smell even if it’s been sitting in a drawer or closet for a few days.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 2 tablespoons vodka or witch hazel
  • 20 drops essential oils
  • 8 oz glass spray bottle

Instructions:

  1. Add the vodka or witch hazel to your spray bottle.
  2. Drop in the essential oils.
  3. Add water to fill.
  4. Shake gently to combine, and always shake again before using to re-disperse the oils into the water.

Fresh and Clean Essential Oil Blends

These are my favorite blends for fresh linens, plus a few others you can rotate out with the season.

Fresh Linen Blend

  • 10 drops lavender
  • 6 drops lemon
  • 4 drops rosemary

Bright & Breezy

  • 8 drops bergamot
  • 6 drops eucalyptus
  • 4 drops tea tree
  • 2 drops lavender

Soft Cotton Breeze

  • 10 drops lemon
  • 6 drops vanilla oleoresin
  • 4 drops peppermint

Sunshine on the Clothesline

  • 10 drops sweet orange
  • 5 drops lavender
  • 3 drops cedarwood
  • 2 drops lemon

Other Places You Can Use Your Linen Spray

I use this spray in so many places around the house. It’s the easiest way to freshen things up before Mike or the kids come home.

  • On freshly made beds 20 minutes before bedtime
  • Over towels hanging in the bathroom
  • Inside the linen closets or dresser drawers
  • On curtains or throw blankets in high-traffic areas
  • Into laundry baskets after folding
