Use this instant Amish home remedy for congestion the next time a cold or flu virus, or seasonal allergies act up.
Being congested is the worst and can often last many days to weeks on end. I know for my family, our congestion is worst in the mornings and then again come late afternoon/early evening.
Blocked airways can lead to fatigue, headache and migraines, shortness of breath, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
This Amish home remedy for congestion is normally our first line of defense before we move on to stronger remedies like colloidal silver and iodine nebulizers to help clear things up. We call it “steam therapy” with the little ones to help them understand and it usually goes over pretty well. It’s very easy to make, smells wonderful and is soothing to irritated little noses and chests.
For added relief, you can also try the natural Vicks vapor rub and Amish cough syrup. They are safe and extremely effective for promoting comfort. I recommended them all of the time when I was still seeing patients as a nurse.
Amish Decongestant Home Remedy
This Amish decongestant home remedy only has four ingredients and is very easy to make, even when you don’t feel well.
Peppermint: Peppermint contains menthol, a compound known for its cooling effect. Menthol helps relax the muscles around the nasal passages and acts as a mild decongestant. When you inhale steam infused with peppermint, menthol vapor helps to open up your airways and make it easier to breathe.
Rosemary: Rosemary contains essential oils with anti-inflammatory properties, such as cineole. Cineole can help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and improve airflow. Inhaling steam with rosemary helps to soothe irritated tissues and reduce congestion, making breathing more comfortable.
Thyme: Thyme is rich in thymol, a compound with antimicrobial and expectorant properties. Thymol helps to break down mucus and clear out blocked nasal passages. By inhaling thyme-infused steam, you can help loosen mucus and promote easier breathing.
How to Make the Amish Home Remedy for Congestion
Ingedients:
- 1 tablespoon peppermint leaves
- 1 heaping teaspoon rosemary
- 1 heaping teaspoon thyme leaves
- 4 cups of water
Instructions:
In a small pot, add the herbs to the water. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil.
Turn the heat off and put a lid on the pot to keep steam in and allow the herbs to steep for 10 minutes.
Remove the pot from the stove and place it on the counter on a trivet or folded dish towel to protect the countertop.
Take a bath or dish towel and drape it over you or your child’s head. Remove the cover from the pot, lean over the pot and allow the towel to drape on all sides of the pot so that your head is within the tent.
Breathe in the steam as deeply as you can and hold the steam for 10 seconds. Breathe out and slowly repeat the inhalation therapy for about 5 minutes.
Repeat as often as needed and use in conjunction with natural Vicks vapor rub and homemade Amish cough syrup to alleviate discomforts.
