This old fashioned beef stew recipe only requires 15 minutes of prep time making it the perfect cold weather meal for busy moms.

My favorite thing about cold weather is the food. Warm, aromatic comfort food can make any gloomy day instantly better.

When ever I ask my father-in-law what he’s craving when he comes over for dinner – this is it.

This old fashioned beef stew recipe is easy to customize and can be adapted to any special diets or palates.

Easy Tips for Making An Old Fashioned Beef Stew Recipe

  1. If you’re short on time, peel and chop vegetables the night before. They can all be stored together in a one gallon Ziploc bag in the fridge until the morning.
  2. A stalk of celery is the entire bunch. It took me forever to learn this but the individual piece of celery is actually called a rib!
  3. This is one of our go to meal prep recipes for Sunday cooking. It keeps well for 5-6 days and reheats even better!

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs beef chuck for stew
  • ¾ cup dry red wine

  • 1 stalk of celery, chopped
  • 5 medium russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 2 dried bay leafs
  • Ground black pepper to taste

How to Make Old Fashioned Beef Stew

  1. Place beef in the crockpot. Add flour and mix until the meat is well coated.
  2. Add dry seasoning to beef (salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, and bay leafs) and mix until well incorporated.
  3. Add broth, red wine, onions, carrots, celery, and potatoes.
  4. Make sure the cover is on properly. Cook on high for 7 hours.
  5. 30 minutes before serving, add 1 additional tablespoon of flour. Mix well.
  6. Reduce temperature of the crockpot to “keep warm” and leave the cover off. Allow the gravy to thicken.
  7. Serve when desired gravy consistency is reached.

Yields about 8 adult servings. Allow 15 minutes for prep and 7.5 hours for cooking.
