This homemade sinus balm helps relieve nasal pressure and congestion using menthol crystals, eucalyptus, and camphor. Includes a gentler version for kids and sensitive skin.

Once September hits and the kids go back to school, I feel like there is at least one congested person in the house at all times until April. Rather than take daily medication, we can usually get by comfortably with strong shower steamers and this homemade sinus balm.

It’s strong, works fast, and is made with ingredients that help open up the airways quickly. I keep a small jar of it in the kitchen cabinet throughout cold and flu season.

This version includes menthol crystals, camphor, and eucalyptus radiata oil, which work together to improve breathing and reduce sinus pressure. There’s also a milder version below for kids or anyone with sensitive skin.

Why It Works

Shea Butter: a rich, creamy fat that melts into the skin and acts as the perfect base for balms. It soothes irritated skin around the nose and cheeks, especially when you’re blowing your nose all day. It also helps carry the essential oils deep into the skin for better absorption.

Coconut Oil: adds a little extra softness to the balm and makes it easier to spread. It’s also naturally antimicrobial, which is helpful when you’re dealing with sinus pressure caused by a viral or bacterial infection.

Beeswax: gives the balm structure and creates a light protective barrier. This helps lock in the oils and keep your skin from drying out.

Menthol Crystals: made from peppermint oil and deliver that instant cooling sensation that makes your sinuses feel like they just opened up. They work by triggering cold-sensitive receptors in the nose to reduce that heavy, stuffy feeling.

Camphor Essential Oil: a strong, warming oil that helps reduce inflammation in the sinuses and chest. It’s commonly used in vapor rubs and muscle creams because of how quickly it opens the airways and boosts circulation to the area.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: a classic congestion remedy. It has antimicrobial properties and helps break up mucus so it can drain more easily. Eucalyptus works hand-in-hand with menthol and camphor to make this balm truly effective. For this sinus balm, make sure you use eucalyptus radiata or globulus. Replace the eucalyptus with rosalina for the kid version.

Spearmint or Peppermint Essential Oil: either one works well, but I like spearmint for a slightly gentler scent and peppermint for stronger clearing power. Both help reinforce the cooling, refreshing sensation.

Unker’s Therapeutic Rub: if you’ve been with me over the years, you’ll know that this is my not-so-secret weapon. Unker’s is an old-fashioned, multi-use herbal rub made with wintergreen, eucalyptus, pine needle, and camphor oils. Adding a small amount to the balm gives it an extra punch and helps it work even faster. If you’ve ever used Unker’s, you know it doesn’t mess around and fixes everything from a stiff neck to migraines and congestion.

Rosalina Essential Oil (kid-safe version): sometimes called “lavender tea tree”, rosalina is a gentle decongestant and perfect swap for eucalyptus. It’s safe for kids, calming to the nervous system, and still helps open the airways without the intensity of stronger oils.

Lavender or Frankincense Essential Oil: both are soothing and anti-inflammatory. Lavender is relaxing and skin-calming, while frankincense brings added immune support and grounding. Either one is a good choice for easing congestion and helping kids rest.

Homemade Sinus Balm That’s Stronger Than Vapor Rub

Ingredients (full-strength adult version):

Instructions:

1. Melt shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax in a double boiler over low heat.

2. Stir in crushed menthol crystals until fully dissolved.

3. Remove from heat. Add essential oils and Unker’s. Stir well.

4. Pour into a 4 oz jar or tin and let cool completely.

How to Use:

Apply a small amount under the cheekbones, along the temples, and across the forehead. You can also dab it behind the ears or at the base of the skull. Do not apply near the eyes or inside the nose. This balm is strong – start with a tiny amount.

Gentle Kid-Safe Version:

  • 2 tbsp shea butter
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp beeswax
  • 1/8 tsp crushed menthol crystals
  • 2 drops camphor essential oil
  • 2 drops rosalina essential oil
  • 2 drops lavender or frankincense essential oil

Use the same instructions as above. This version is milder but still helps open the sinuses without overwhelming sensitive skin.

Notes & storage

  • For ages 5 and older only. Test a small area of skin first.
  • Do not use on broken skin or too close to the eyes or lips.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. Will easily keep in the cabinet or pantry for up to 6 months.

Fire Cider at the first sign of illness

Mustard Plaster if the congestion moves to the chest

Shower Steamers to clear the airways before bed
