Make your own hand sanitizer spray in less than a minute with this easy DIY tutorial.

I’m pretty sure I have one of these little amber glass spray bottles in every single bag I own. There’s one in my car, in the kitchen, on the porch, in the backyard…they’re everywhere.

Commercial hand sanitizers repeatedly test for harmful chemicals. To keep my autoimmune flare ups under control and protect our family’s health, I do the best that I can to avoid known toxins and hormone disruptors.

This DIY hand sanitizer spray has 2 ingredients

  1. Grain alcohol
  2. Essential oil

What is grain alcohol?

Grain alcohol is a type of pure alcohol produced as a byproduct from fermented grains. It can be made from many different types of grain including wheat, corn, rye, and sugar cane.

An alcohol concentration of 60% is considered acceptable by the CDC to use in hand sanitizers.

A solution containing 70% alcohol that is left on a surface for 30 seconds is strong enough to kill the coronavirus.

Grain alcohol is a pure alcohol and around 75.5%-95% alcohol by volume (ABV) depending on the source.

Which Essential Oils Are Best for a DIY hand sanitizer?

Since grain alcohol is enough by itself to effectively clean your hands, essential oils are added for fragrance and therapeutic benefit.

For a hand sanitizer spray, you can use what ever essential oil appeals to you.

My daughter’s favorite is orange while mine is peppermint.

Both are invigorating and mood lifting scents that help to clear the mind for that mid-day energy boost.

Because I refill the spray bottles often, I tend to only use a single oil over making blends with two or more.

While essential oils work better when they’re combined with each other, the purpose of a hand sanitizer spray is not for any therapeutic benefit or to alleviate discomfort.

Our goal is to kill germs which grain alcohol can do by itself. Using single oils saves both time and money.

Whichever oils you choose, be sure to rotate them out every two weeks to avoid desensitizing your body to their properties from repeated exposure.
