Homemade sore throat spray made with honey, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils. Safe, natural, and fast-acting relief for cold and flu season.

When cold and flu season hits, sore throats are usually one of the first warning signs. Instead of running out for an over-the-counter spray loaded with dyes, preservatives, and questionable ingredients, you can make your own at home in less than 10 minutes.

This simple spray uses natural ingredients that soothe inflammation, fight bacteria, and bring quick relief. The best part? You control what goes into it.

This means no artificial sweeteners, no hidden chemicals, and no long list of side effects. It’s one of those easy remedies that you’ll be glad to have on hand the next time someone in your family wakes up with a scratchy throat.

*This sore throat spray is not for children under 1 year old due to the honey content and risk of botulism.

*If you are using with children under the age of 6, do not add the essential oils to the mixture. Use honey, ACV, and water only.

What’s In It:

  • Raw Honey: Coats and soothes the throat while fighting off bacteria. Honey is naturally antimicrobial and has been used for hundreds of years in cold and flu remedies. It also thickens the spray to help the mixture stick to the back of the throat.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Balances throat pH, helps slow bacterial growth, and supports the immune system. It also cuts through mucus and promotes healing.
  • Peppermint Essential Oil: Provides a cooling, numbing sensation that takes the edge off of throat pain. It also helps open the airways and ease breathing when you’re stuffy.
  • Clove Bud Essential Oil: A natural numbing agent that has been used by dentists for centuries. A tiny amount can dull pain and make swallowing less uncomfortable.
  • Lemon Essential Oil: Adds a fresh taste, supports immunity with its natural vitamin C properties, and helps cut through phlegm if your sore throat is paired with congestion.

How to Make a DIY Sore Throat Spray for Fast Relief

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with the mother
  • 6 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 4 drops clove bud essential oil
  • 3 drops lemon essential oil
  • Small glass spray bottle

Instructions:

  1. Boil the water for safety, and allow it to cool to a safe but still warm temperature.
  2. Dissolve the honey in the warm water.
  3. Stir in the apple cider vinegar until fully blended.
  4. Add the essential oils one drop at a time, swirling gently to mix.
  5. Pour the mixture into a sterilized glass spray bottle.

How to Use:

Keep the spray in your fridge and shake before each use. At the first sign of throat pain, spray it 2 to 3 times toward the back of your throat. Allow it to sit for a minute before swallowing. You can reapply every couple of hours as needed.

This remedy is especially helpful before bed when a sore throat can keep you awake. Since the honey is coating, it often lasts longer than store-bought sprays.

FAQs

Can I give this to kids?

This spray is not safe for children under 1 year old due to the risk of botulism from honey.

For children under 6, skip the essential oils and stick to just honey, water, and a splash of vinegar. Always use pure, therapeutic-grade oils if using with older kids.

How long does it last?

Because this recipe is water-based, it doesn’t have a long shelf life. Store in the refrigerator and use within 2 weeks. If you want to extend the shelf life, you can make smaller batches or add a natural preservative like vodka (1 tablespoon per batch).

What if I don’t have essential oils?

No problem. The honey and apple cider vinegar alone will still bring relief. You can also steep a whole clove or cinnamon stick in the warm water for a few minutes before mixing to add extra soothing properties.

Is this safe during pregnancy?

Yes, if you leave out the clove oil and stick with honey, vinegar, and lemon oil. Always consult your provider if you’re unsure, but this is much gentler than most over-the-counter sprays.
